WordPress Alternative NZ

A website that works, without the WordPress upkeep.

You wanted a website, not a second job patching plugins. There is a faster, cleaner way to run a business site that ranks and converts, with none of the updates, bloat or security holes WordPress quietly hands you. Here is the honest comparison, and what we build instead.

Why people leave WordPress

WordPress is free. Running it is not.

WordPress powers a huge share of the web, and it can be made to work. But for a small business owner it quietly turns into a maintenance job you never applied for. The site gets heavier and slower every year, and the list of things that can break keeps growing.

Which alternative is right

Not every WordPress alternative is the same.

Search “WordPress alternative” and you get a wall of website builders. They solve different problems to a custom build:

Website builders (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify). Cheap, quick and fine for a hobby, a placeholder or a simple store. You trade control and speed for convenience, and you rent the platform. If your site does not need to win competitive Google searches, a builder may be all you need.

A custom, static-first build (what we do). For a business that needs to rank, load fast and look like the obvious choice, a hand-built site gives you the speed and SEO a builder cannot, and the ease a raw WordPress install cannot. We build these on Astro: fast by default, no plugins, no database, no maintenance treadmill. It is the same stack every brand we own runs on.

WordPress vs a modern build

The same website, minus the parts you hate.

Your site on WordPress
  • Plugins and a theme shipped to every visitor
  • Core, theme and plugin updates forever
  • Security surface that grows with every add-on
  • Gets slower and heavier every year
  • Hosting muscle to compensate for the weight
Your site with Igloo
  • Finished HTML, only the code the page needs
  • Nothing to patch, nothing to break
  • No database or plugins to attack
  • Fast on day one, and it stays fast
  • Static hosting for a few dollars a month
But can I still edit it?

Yes. Leaving WordPress does not mean losing your login.

This is the fear that keeps people on WordPress, and it is out of date. You get a Sanity login: a clean editor where you change your own content safely, without touching code and without the page-builder mess. You edit content in defined fields, so you get the freedom to change things without the freedom to break them.

In other words, you keep the one thing WordPress got right, easy editing, and drop the rest. If you would rather never touch it, that is fine too: our Website Updates Plan means we look after content changes for you.

Already on WordPress?

You do not have to start from scratch.

If you already have a WordPress site, moving off it is a rebuild, not a reset. We keep your content, map every old URL to a redirect so your rankings survive, and rebuild the front end fast and clean. We did exactly this with our own home-services brand, Spruce, off WordPress and onto Astro with every URL redirected. The full process lives on our WordPress to Astro migration page, and there is a deeper read in why your site is slow, and the fix.

Proof

We left WordPress ourselves.

Spruce and Datum are both live, both built the modern way. We are not selling a theory about leaving WordPress. We did it, on our own money.

WordPress alternative FAQs

The things people ask first.

What is the best WordPress alternative for a NZ business?

It depends on what the site is for. For a hobby or a placeholder, a builder like Wix or Squarespace is fine and cheap. For a business that needs to rank on Google, load fast and convert visitors into work, a custom static-first build gives you far more speed, control and SEO without the plugin and maintenance treadmill. That is what we build, on Astro.

Is a WordPress alternative harder to update?

No, and this is the myth worth killing. Leaving WordPress does not mean losing your login. We set you up with a modern content editor so you can change text, swap images, update FAQs and add articles yourself. You get easy editing without the page-builder chaos and without a developer for every tweak.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I move off WordPress?

Not if the move is done properly. Rankings live on your URLs, so a good migration maps every old URL to its new one with 301 redirects before the switch. Done right, Google follows the redirects and your rankings come with you. That is exactly what our WordPress to Astro migration handles.

Why are so many businesses leaving WordPress?

The upkeep. Core, theme and plugins all need patching, page builders make pages heavy, security holes appear through plugins, and the site gets slower every year. Most owners did not sign up to be part-time site administrators. A modern alternative removes almost all of that maintenance.

Is a WordPress alternative cheaper?

It is usually cheaper to run. There is no database, no plugins to license or patch, and static hosting costs a few dollars a month instead of the hosting muscle a heavy WordPress site needs. The build cost is comparable to a good WordPress build; the saving is in the years afterward.

Can it still do everything WordPress does, like a blog, forms and ecommerce?

Yes. Static-first does not mean static-only. A modern build handles a blog, forms, bookings, search and even ecommerce through integrations, a headless CMS and serverless functions. You get the speed of a static site with the function of a dynamic one.
