Web Design New Zealand

For challengers that are better than their website makes them look.

The incumbent down the road has the bigger budget and a website that has not changed in five years. You have the better business and the weaker site. We flip that, into a site that makes you the obvious choice and converts like one.

Why your website matters

Most challengers lose on the website, before a word is spoken.

A buyer sizes you up against the big incumbent in seconds, on your site alone. If it loads slow, looks like a template, or says nothing specific, you have already lost to a business that is no better than you but looks safer.

Challenger vs incumbent

Big is slow. That is the whole opening.

Market leaders get comfortable. Their websites are designed by committee, locked in a slow system, and built to offend no one. That is exactly the gap a sharp challenger walks straight through.

The incumbent
  • Generic, designed by committee
  • Slow to load, slower to change
  • Says everything, means nothing
  • Locked to a retainer to keep it that way
You, with Igloo
  • A site that looks like only you
  • Fast, and built to convert from day one
  • One sharp, specific message
  • Yours to keep, and quick to move

Website design New Zealand

What does good website design include?

Plenty of websites are pretty. Far fewer are engineered. These six capabilities go into every site we ship, most of them built on Astro, the fast static-first stack every Igloo brand runs on. The search side runs on the same discipline as our SEO service: designed together, never bolted on.

  1. 01 Responsive design For many of your visitors the phone is the only screen they will ever meet you on, so we design for the small screen first and scale up, not the other way round. Layouts, type and touch targets are built to feel considered at every size, from an old iPhone to an ultrawide monitor. No pinching, no horizontal scroll, no desktop site squeezed into a mobile costume. The phone version is the site.
  2. 02 SEO built in A site nobody finds is expensive decoration. Before any pixel is styled we map what your buyers actually search, then build the structure to match: one page per intent, clean headings, honest metadata, schema markup and internal links that pass authority where it should go. When the site launches it is already speaking Google’s language, so the ranking work starts on day one instead of after an expensive retrofit.
  3. 03 CMS options You should not need a developer to fix a typo. Our default is a Sanity login so you can edit your own content: text, images, FAQs and articles, kept safely apart from the code. Simple sites that rarely change can stay on a lighter Git-based setup instead. Editing that fits your team, without the plugin sprawl.
  4. 04 Ecommerce capability If you sell online, the same discipline applies to the store. We build Shopify stores and custom storefronts with fast product pages, category structures that rank, and a checkout with the friction designed out, because every slow second on a store is a customer walking out. If selling is the site’s whole job, start with our ecommerce website design service instead.
  5. 05 Designed for users Most websites are organised around the company’s org chart. Ours are organised around the visitor’s decision. We map the questions a buyer arrives with, put the answers in the order they need them, and make the next step obvious on every screen. Fewer choices, clearer paths, no dead ends. The result reads less like a brochure and more like a good salesperson who respects your time.
  6. 06 Performance as standard Speed is a ranking factor, a conversion factor, and the first impression a visitor gets before reading a word. We build to Core Web Vitals from the first commit: lean code, optimised images, self-hosted fonts, and a hard budget on every script that wants to tag along. Do not take our word for it. Run this page through Google’s Lighthouse and compare it with the incumbent you are chasing.
How we build

Carve. Build. Weather.

One method, three moves. Most of the result is decided before launch, in how sharply we read the market.

01

Carve the angle

We study the leader in your market and find where they are slow, generic or exposed. That gap, plus the angle only you can own, becomes the brief.

02

Build the system

We design and build the whole site against that angle. Every section tensioned to it, fast by default, nothing decorative, nothing wasted.

03

Weather the market

We launch, measure what actually lands, and keep sharpening it. The first version is rarely the last. We refine until it wins its position and holds it.

Technology capabilities

A build stack chosen for speed, not habit.

Every tool here earns its place on speed, search or reliability. Nothing ships because it is fashionable.

  1. 01 Astro Fast, SEO-ready websites without heavy front-end bloat.
  2. 02 Vercel Production hosting, preview builds and fast deployment.
  3. 03 Cloudflare DNS, redirects, caching and performance and security controls.
  4. 04 TypeScript Cleaner code for more reliable custom builds.
  5. 05 Tailwind CSS Responsive layouts and reusable design systems.
  6. 06 React Interactive components where the site needs more than static pages.
  7. 07 Headless WordPress WordPress editing with a faster custom front end.
  8. 08 MDX Fast article hubs and structured content libraries.
  9. 09 Schema Structured data that helps search engines understand the page.
  10. 10 Core Web Vitals Performance standards built into the project, not patched later.

Web design cost

How much does web design cost in New Zealand?

A professionally designed business website in New Zealand usually lands between a few thousand dollars and the mid five figures. The spread is that wide because you are not buying pages, you are buying scope: how many page types need designing, whether you sell online, how much content already exists, and how much custom function sits behind the front end.

Cheap has its own price: a template site that loads slowly and ranks nowhere costs more in lost work than it ever saved. It is why we built a dedicated WordPress to Astro migration service, and why we are often hired as the WordPress alternative from the start. The ranges below are indicative, not a quote.

Web design pricing

No surprise invoices.

Most agencies hide the number until they have you on a call. Here are the indicative ranges. Your exact figure depends on scope, which we agree in writing before any work starts.

Landing page
from $1,800
1 to 2 weeks

One sharp page built to convert a single campaign, offer or ad spend into booked work.

Custom build
from $12k
6 to 10 weeks

Bespoke design, ecommerce, booking, or the custom software that runs behind it.

Indicative ranges, not a quote. We scope the exact number with you up front, in writing, before anything begins.

Web design timeline

How long does a website take to build?

We scope a sharp landing page at one to two weeks, a full business site at three to five, and bespoke builds with ecommerce or custom features at six to ten. Those numbers hold because speed and search are engineered in as we build, not patched at the end, the same discipline behind our website speed optimisation work.

What stretches a build is rarely the design. It is content that does not exist yet, and feedback by committee. We solve both up front, and the timeline is agreed in writing before we start. We build for challengers across Auckland and, remotely, the rest of the country.

Web design FAQs

The things people ask first.

How much does a website cost in New Zealand?

Indicative tiers are on this page: landing pages from around $1,800, most business sites between $4,000 and $9,000, bespoke builds with ecommerce or custom features from $12,000. Scope sets the number, and we agree yours in writing before work starts. No surprise invoices.

Do you only work with local businesses?

No. We are Auckland based and work remotely with challengers across New Zealand. Most of the work happens in shared docs and calls, not a meeting room, so where you are makes no difference to the craft.

What do you build websites on?

Fast, modern stacks, not a bloated off-the-shelf theme buried in plugins. Speed is a ranking and conversion factor, engineered in from the first commit. Do not take our word for it: run this page through Google’s Lighthouse test.

How long does a website take?

We scope a sharp landing page at one to two weeks and a full business site at three to five. The timeline is agreed in writing before we start. No drifting six month builds.

Do you do SEO as well?

Yes, and it is built in from the first wireframe, not bolted on at the end. A beautiful site nobody can find is a poster in a locked room. SEO is also a service on its own if that is where you need to start.

What makes you different from a normal agency?

We have run the kind of business we build for. Spruce, the home cleaning brand we started, grew on a website and systems we built ourselves, and holds a real 4.9 Google rating from 131 reviews. Most agencies sell growth they have only watched from the outside. We sell what we have actually done.

What if I already have a website?

We will tell you honestly whether it needs a full rebuild or just sharpening. Sometimes the structure is sound and it only needs better positioning and speed. We do not sell work you do not need.

Ready?

Let’s break the ice.

Tell us who you are up against online. We will show you where their site is weak, and exactly where to aim yours. No retainer pitch, no hot air. Just the plan.

Not ready to commit? Send us your current site for a free teardown: what is slowing it down, where it leaks leads, and what we would fix first.
